APPROACH

How I reposition a brand.

How I reposition a brand.

A rebrand is a logo. A repositioning is a decision about what the company means, made at the top and defensible under pressure. I work on the second one — then I make sure the first one is built to carry it for a decade.

THE FRAMEWORK

Essence First

Essence First

Most repositionings fail in the same place: the visual system arrives before the argument does. So the new brand looks different, means nothing, and gets relitigated within eighteen months. I do it in the other order. Values and core attributes first, then world-class expression, then the system that makes it survive contact with the enterprise.

Find the truth the company already has

Find the truth the company already has

Repositioning is not invention. It is excavation. I go through the business, the customers, the employees, and the competitive field to find the true thing that is durable, ownable, and uncomfortable enough to be real. If the leadership team cannot argue for it in a board meeting, it is not the position.

PRODUCES

A defensible position in one sentence the CEO will actually repeat.

02

02

Set the essence and the core attributes

Set the essence and the core attributes

Essence and a short list of core attributes come before a single visual decision. They are the constitution: every later argument about color, tone, casting, or campaign resolves against them instead of against seniority. This is the step that makes the brand governable at scale.

PRODUCES

Brand essence, core attributes, and the language that governs every expression downstream.

03

Prove it once, undeniably

Prove it once, undeniably

Decks do not move companies. One flagship expression does. Early on I build a single piece of work — a film, a launch, a flagship experience — so good that the internal debate ends and the organization can finally see what the new position feels like. Everything after that is easier to fund.

PRODUCES

Internal belief, executive air cover, and a reference standard for everything that follows.

04

04

Build a system, not a style

Build a system, not a style

Then the full apparatus: identity, typography, motion, photography direction, product and retail application, templates, and the governance that decides who can change what. A style guide describes taste. A system distributes judgment to people I will never meet.

PRODUCES

A complete brand system with governance and tooling built for enterprise scale.

05

05

Land it inside the company

Land it inside the company

The launch is the midpoint, not the finish. Adoption is won by training teams, equipping regions, sitting with product and sales, and answering the same question a hundred times without getting bored. I have trained teams across three continents for exactly this reason.

PRODUCES

Enterprise-wide adoption that outlives the launch cycle and the leadership that approved it.

WHEN IT WORKS

NRG is the clearest test of the model.

NRG is the clearest test of the model.

I repositioned a Fortune 500 energy company from legacy-corporate to human and future-facing — values and core attributes first, then the expressions. The same work produced the in-house creative organization that set the standard for the entire company.
